More about the town wall

The Witch Tower is one of the last preserved town wall towers. It was built as a watch tower and a prison. Witches accused of "black magic" were also imprisoned here while awaiting trial and (usually) the scaffold.

The free spaces between the wall structures (the Schwibbogen) were used for shacks, pens (pigsties), small businesses etc.. Later on the tiny holes served as dwellings.

In the last century the gates to the town were laid down to make room for larger vehicles. There is only one bastion left now.
